The University of Holguin is hosting the 2026 edition of the CreLab Circular Hackathon. A scientific and competitive event coordinated by the InnoLabs Project. The initiative’s fundamental purpose is to encourage the application of engineering. In the transformation of industrial waste into sustainable solutions. Promoting the talent of young university students in service of the region’s economic development.
This year, the event brings together students from the Industrial, Mechanical, Computer, and Civil Engineering programs. Participants face the challenge of working in multidisciplinary teams to offer creative and viable solutions. To real-world challenges in the production environment. Combining process optimization, technical design, and digitalization.

Also the competition’s central focus is the Médano Company. A provincial entity dedicated to the production of construction materials, serving as a case study. This organization, which is already making progress in diversifying its product lines and implementing the circular economy. Currently demands efficient alternatives to optimize its processes. Reduce operating costs, and substitute imports—tasks that the student projects aim to directly address.
During the event’s opening, the organizers emphasized that this Hackathon provides a real-world space for connecting with production. Moving beyond the dynamics of mere academic simulation. They also stressed that the proposals generated by the students are intended to become the seeds of tangible transformations for national industry. Demonstrating the innovative capacity of the next generation of Cuban engineers.
To guarantee the viability and subsequent integration of the presented solutions. The competition is being held through a strategic alliance between the University of Holguin. Also through its Vice-Rectorate for Research and Postgraduate Studies—the Médano Company, and the Holguin Scientific and Technological Industrial Park. This cooperation ensures methodological support and the ideal channel for the future implementation of the approved projects.
