Construction Innovation Event Underway in Holguin

The University of Holguin (UHo) and the Construction Materials Company (Médano) are hosting the Circular CreLab 2026 Hackathon. An event aimed at generating innovative, sustainable, and technological solutions for the construction industry.

Marisol Pérez Campaña, Vice-Rector of Strategic Management at the university, explained to CNA that the competition seeks to promote the circular economy. Optimize the supply chain through the participation of young engineering students.

Over three days, 10 multidisciplinary teams, randomly formed by students specializing in fields. Such as Civil, Mechanical, Industrial, and Computer Engineering. It will work on conceptual or functional ideas aimed at solving real-world challenges in the sector, she said.

Yudelkis Salcedo Fernández, technical and development director of Médano, explained that the challenges to be addressed include waste reduction, reuse, and valorization. Improvements to internal and external logistics. And proposals to decrease energy consumption in production processes.

The teams will have access to prior technical information. Such as flow diagrams, energy consumption data, waste types, and applicable environmental regulations. Which will facilitate the design of solutions that can also incorporate digital monitoring, control, or traceability systems, she noted.

Sponsored by the province’s Scientific and Technological Industrial Park, the event is part of the international InnoLabs project. Aimed at creating innovation and entrepreneurship laboratories in higher education in Ecuador and Cuba. Supporting ideas that address local problems, the vice-rector added.

The winning solutions will serve as a scientific basis for their application in provincial industry. And will receive membership in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Laboratory of the Holguin institution, with the goal of supporting research.

In Cuba, InnoLabs is represented by the Technological University of Havana (Cujae). The University of Cienfuegos, and the University of Holguin (UHo). Also where it promotes technology transfer, strengthens entrepreneurial skills in students, and improves their job placement.
