The number of dead and injured from the earthquakes in Venezuela on June 24th has risen to 1,450 and 3,150, respectively. Revealed Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly (parliament), in a report this Sunday.
The legislator specified that the injured were reported in hospitals in La Guaira. The region most affected by the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes. In hospitals in the seven states impacted by the natural phenomenon. Which he described as the “most brutal natural disaster” in the nation’s history.
He added that as a result of the devastation, 12,721 people were affected, 774 buildings were damaged or collapsed. Of which 189 were completely destroyed and 585 suffered partial damage. And 38 hospitals were damaged, which “we are rapidly repairing,” he noted.
Among the disaster figures, he also mentioned damage to 44 shopping centers and 1,645 other structures. Such as bridges and roads, for a total of 2,501 affected infrastructures.
Rodríguez indicated that after the two earthquakes, they assisted 73,937 families, distributed 7,225,000 kilograms of food. Directly delivered 20,000 bags of food, primarily in La Guaira, and served 222,147 hot meals.
From a medical standpoint, he detailed that 527 injured or affected individuals were transferred to Caracas for treatment in its hospitals or private clinics. While another 4,200 received medical assistance and 7,168 were seen in triage areas (emergency rooms).
These latter cases took place in hospitals in Valencia (Carabobo), the Capital District, Maracay (Aragua). In the field hospitals set up in La Guaira, for a total of 12,049 citizens who received medical attention, he emphasized.
Regarding the international brigades that arrived in the country in solidarity. The parliamentarian indicated that their numbers had increased to 2,624 rescuers, 137 dogs, 49 support vehicles, and 84.4 tons of equipment, medicines, and medical and surgical supplies.
“We have received everyone with gratitude and open arms, without making any distinctions,” he stated. Adding that everyone who offers help “receives our immediate approval” because “we are not considering any political or geographical factors, nothing of the sort,” he emphasized.
He highlighted the volunteer process at the Poliedro de Caracas, with 7,866 registered volunteers. Which “has been running almost perfectly” and has brought order to the immense need of Venezuelans to help their neighbors.
Rodríguez announced the availability of the telephone hotline 0-800-Help 01 to address psychological issues. Such as anxiety, grief, and sadness. Callers will be able to receive specialized care from psychologists and psychiatrists.
He also announced the launch of the website https://www.searchpatients.com. Which will serve as a tool to locate missing persons in any healthcare facility, anywhere in the country.
