Scientists and engineers from the Chinese Space Program presented a project to build a one-kilometer-wide orbital solar power station located at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers.
The structure will continuously capture solar radiation without atmospheric interference or night cycles. Transmitting the energy to receiving stations on Earth via microwave beams.
Designers of the Long March rocket compare the scale and capacity of the project to the Three Gorges Dam. Estimating that the annual energy harvest could equal the energy potential of global oil extraction.
The plan envisions launching modules using super-heavy-lift rockets for subsequent automated assembly in orbit. It is still facing challenges in wireless transmission efficiency and logistical costs.
