Photo Exhibition in Holguin Evokes Martí’s Campaign Diary

The exhibition “Lights from a Diary,” which brings together the work of three photographers. It was inaugurated in Holguin to commemorate José Martí’s Campaign Diary. An intense and poetic war chronicle written up until the moments before his death in combat. Also an intimate legacy of his struggle for independence.

The photographs belong to Dany Hernández, the project’s promoter. Pedrito Guzmán, a Dominican artist who contributed the Apostle’s visions and memories from Cap-Haïtien in the Dominican Republic. And Juan Pablo Carreras, the last to join the project to document the National Hero’s time in Holguin.

Moreover the space, open to the public this Sunday in the lobby of the Cine Martí. It is part of the program for the fourth annual “Jornadas del Cariño” (Day of Affection). Dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of José Martí in the centennial year of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution. And the 100th anniversary of the creation of the first film screening room in the City of Parks.

Héctor Niles Ávalos, president of the José Martí Cultural Society in the region, told the Cuban News Agency (CNA) the importance of bringing the people of Holguin closer to Martí’s legacy in this land. To the encounters he had with its people, and to the affection he found in Holguin. This is why the “Jornadas” are held every year. With the aim of contributing research and elements that strengthen this historical connection.

Eliel Gómez, president of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba in the province. He explained that this exhibition is the culmination of years of effort to consolidate. Through various connections and perspectives, the legacy of José Martí’s Campaign Diary. Which remains relevant through photography and the visual arts.

Juan Pablo Carreras, co-author of the exhibition, explained that the original idea has evolved into a creative project. That successfully unites three different photographic visions and styles into a unique, organic, and stylistic discourse. Linked by Martí’s prose from his Campaign Diary. The aim is to offer new generations a more accessible and contemporary way to engage with his work.

The event also celebrated the first anniversary of the “El verso amigo” literary group. Sponsored by the José Martí Cultural Society, and the 50th anniversary of the Cuban News Agency’s Holguin bureau.
