The Coastal Management Department of the Center for Environmental Research and Services (CISAT) in Holguin province. It is conducting a study of the coastline based on sea level rise, one of the consequences of climate change.
Ridel Rodríguez Paneque, PhD and senior researcher at CISAT, told the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that 58 percent of the beaches in the province. A total of 38, could disappear or suffer critical damage by the end of this century due to this phenomenon.
He pointed out that, although the study only evaluates the rise in average sea level. Coastal erosion is a multifactorial process involving various factors in the wearing away of the shoreline.
The research does not constitute an environmental alert, but rather proposes a reevaluation of the current model. And suggests two urgent lines of action focused on economic diversification and territorial sustainability. Given the vulnerability of these areas, the expert pointed out.
Rodríguez Paneque emphasized that beach conservation fosters community resilience in the face of a constantly changing climate.
Prior to this analysis, Cisat developed a catalog of beaches with key indicators for monitoring, primarily those used for tourism. This is one of the achievements of Tarea Vida (Task Life), the Cuban government’s plan to address climate change. Which benefits 75 municipalities with short-, medium-, and long-term actions.
Cisat’s Coastal Management Department was created in July 2020 and is a key component for the implementation of Tarea Vida (Task Life) on the Holguin coast. Ensuring that decisions regarding tourism and human settlements are based on sound scientific data.
