The IV Cuban Baseball Elite League kicks off its third head-to-head matchup today with a high-voltage clash in Holguin. Also where the Cubs and Lions, tied for first place, will fuel a historic rivalry that promises to fill Calixto García Stadium.
On the Holguin stadium’s grass, an old baseball rivalry will reignite. One that survives the passage of time and the changing standings, because Holguin and Industriales always find reasons to exchange challenging glances. This time, however, the tension will be even higher. As both teams share the top spot in the tournament with five wins and only two losses.
The anticipation is palpable from early morning in the streets of the City of Parks. Where the loyalty of the local fans usually transforms their stadium into a noisy, packed cauldron, capable of propelling their Cubs. Forward with the same intensity with which they intimidate any visiting team dressed in blue.
Holguin will arrive at the game backed by a devastating offense that leads the league in runs scored with 60. In addition to dominating the extra-base hit (37) and home run (14) categories. These numbers explain the offensive onslaught of a lineup that has found its rhythm in almost every at-bat.
On the other side will be an Industriales team that is less explosive at the plate and the only team batting below .300, with a modest collective average of .262. However, they are supported by a pitching staff that ranks third in ERA with 5.86 and leads the league in strikeouts. Averaging 5.05 per nine innings, a sign that the Lions have learned to survive from the mound.
Young Fher Cejas will take the mound for the Havana team after an encouraging debut. In which he pitched three innings and allowed only one run in his first start. Meanwhile, Rubén Rodríguez will start for the home team after giving up seven runs, one unearned, in 5.1 innings across two appearances.
Another focus of the day will be on the 26 de Julio Stadium, where Artemisa will host Matanzas in a crucial game for the Cocodrilos. Also who are reeling after being swept by Holguin at Victoria de Girón Stadium. After starting the season with a sweep against Mayabeque.
The Matanzas team now shares a 4-4 record with Artemisa and Las Tunas. Although their numbers reflect worrying weaknesses. They have the fewest home runs (4), the worst collective ERA with 8.11 earned runs allowed per game, and the most home runs allowed (15).
Artemisa, on the other hand, has built much of its success on defense and pitching. Also boasting the best fielding percentage in the tournament (.980) and the second-best ERA among all pitching staffs at 4.84. These strengths will be key for starting pitcher Raidel Alfonso against Matanzas’ José Carlos Quesada.
The third series will take the Las Tunas Lumberjacks to Nelson Fernández Stadium in San José de Las Lajas to face the Mayabeque Hurricanes. They are desperate for wins and stuck at the bottom of the standings with a 2-6 record.
Moreover the Tuneros, also tied for second place with four wins and four losses. They have found strength in a pitching staff boasting the league’s best ERA (4.75), best WHIP (1.38), and most refined control, issuing only 19 walks. However, they carry the burden of the tournament’s worst defense, with a .957 fielding percentage.
Mayabeque, for its part, has compensated for several of its weaknesses. Thanks to an explosive offense that leads the league with an astronomical .340 batting average. Even so, its pitchers are second in the league for runs allowed per game. Averaging 7.27, a weakness that Frank Denis Blanco will try to correct today against Enyer Fernández.
The Elite League will thus once again lay its cards on the diamond this afternoon. With stadiums poised to roar, rivalries stirring up memories, and a standings table as tight as a bases-loaded ninth inning.
