The Holguin University of Medical Sciences (UCMHo) has reached one hundred Doctors of Science. A figure that demonstrates the consolidation of its doctoral training system. And its capacity to generate its own knowledge from eastern Cuba.
Also this achievement takes on special significance as it comes just days before the centennial of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution. Who conceived the training of scientists as a strategic pillar for the country’s sovereignty.
The one hundredth Doctor of Science is Alma de la Caridad Torres Gómez de Cádiz Agüero, who defended her thesis. A pioneering work in the country, focused on demonstrating the anti-inflammatory effect. Of an active biological complex derived from Mirabilis Jalapa Linn.
Moreover these advancements are part of the Doctoral Training Program in Clinical-Surgical Biomedical Sciences, launched in 2023. Which has allowed the University of Holguin (UCMHo) to become one of only five institutions of its kind in Cuba authorized to grant this academic degree.
Through this program, the first four Doctors of Medical Sciences have already graduated. So their research addressing diverse and high-priority issues for the Cuban healthcare system.
Also the first three dissertations focused on complex topics such as comprehensive care for surgical patients in pediatric, adult, and geriatric age groups. The design of a predictive survival model for the occurrence of heart failure in hypertensive patients. And the development of biosafety competencies in medical students.
Dr. Pedro Augusto Díaz Rojas, the program coordinator, emphasized that this initiative has placed the Holguin institution at the forefront of science and technology, alongside the universities of Havana, Villa Clara, Camagüey, and Santiago de Cuba.
The program has three lines of research: comprehensive medical care for children, adults, and the elderly. Comprehensive care for surgical patients; and biomedical science education.
The UCMHo, founded in 2009 and one of the universities with the highest enrollment in the country. It has demonstrated significant progress in the scientific level of its faculty since last year. Currently has more than one hundred students enrolled in doctoral programs.
Furthermore this institution of higher learning, which cherishes in its daily work the Fidel Castro maxim that “the future of our homeland must necessarily be a future of men and women of science.” It reaffirms with this one hundred PhDs the enduring relevance of a legacy that prioritized education and research as irreplaceable paths to social progress.
