Holguin to Celebrate Affection Day Dedicated to Martí

The fourth annual Affection Day will be celebrated in Holguin from May 9th to 19th. With the aim of defending Cuban identity, history, and culture. Introducing new generations to the figure of José Martí through literature and film.

Also the event, which annually commemorates the Apostle’s historic visit to Holguin. It will be sponsored by the José Martí Cultural Society (SCJM), the Union of Historians, the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. For the first time, will include the participation of the Holguin Provincial Film Center (CPC). In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first movie theater in the City of Parks.

Héctor Niles, president of the Holguin branch of the SCJM (Cuban Society of Journalists of Cuba). Announced at a press conference that the event will address the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. For Sustainable Development and the National Day of Action: From Martí to Fidel. Which commemorates the memory and legacy of José Martí in the centennial year of the Cuban Revolution’s historic leader, Fidel Castro.

Furthermore the activities will be linked to literature, with the presentation of titles such as “Martí in Holguin.” At the opening event at the La Periquera Provincial Museum and the bibliographic exhibition “José Martí, the Most Universal of Cubans” at the Alex Urquiola Provincial Library. Also both events associated with the University of Holguin.

Moreover the program will also connect with the Martí Cinema Centennial campaign. Through the screening of films that explore his thought and legacy, beginning with “Martí in the Eye of the Canary.” Directed by Fernando Pérez, and continuing with a program of documentary and fictional works about Cuban history.

José Luis Rodríguez Arias, director of the CPC, explained that the activities will not be limited to the cinema complex. It will extend to all 14 municipalities, with simultaneous screenings in theaters and video stores of a selection of materials showcasing the work of the National Hero. Aimed at engaging children and young people.

Among the day’s main events will be the presentation of the book *Central Patria*, by Ronel González Sánchez. Winner of the 2025 Nicolás Guillén National Poetry Prize. At the provincial headquarters of the UNEAC (National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba). A meeting of Martí clubs, and the awarding of the Order of Affection as the central moment of the event.

Finally the José Martí Cultural Society was created in 1995 with the objective of exalting the ethical, political, and intellectual values of Martí’s thought. Promoting the study of the struggles to forge and defend the Cuban nation in its different historical periods.
