Meteorological Center in Holguin Promotes Scientific Projects

The Holguin Provincial Meteorological Center is promoting science and technological innovation. Through national and regional projects that contribute to solving local problems. Addressing the effects of climate change.

Zulema Reyes Bermúdez, the institution’s technical deputy director, told CNA that in 2025, research projects began. Such as the monitoring and integrated management of coastal ecosystems in the northeastern region of the province. Coordinated by the University of Moa Dr. Antonio Núñez Jiménez.

She noted that this is complemented by the information model used in agroecological zoning. And the support of early warning systems for decision-making. The fundamental purpose of this project was to incorporate artificial intelligence into agrometeorological services. Deliver them with greater dynamism, precision, and speed. A project implemented by the University of Holguin.

The expert pointed out that among the projects was the management of a model. Aimed at reducing the effects of drought on sugarcane, based on an evaluation of species compatible with this phenomenon. This evaluation was based on previously obtained indicators of climate variability. Assessments of Robusta coffee’s adaptation to these conditions.

Moreover the Center is working on research focused on mitigating climate change in the municipality of Gibara. Through training aimed at establishing a pilot program for the effective use of meteorological information, she stated.

Regarding programs completed from 2023 to the present. She highlighted among the main results the updating of variability. Also environmental impact, and extreme weather events at the local level in forecast scenarios of up to 100 years. Essential for the scientific and technical services offered by the institution.

A management plan proposal for the Bahía Naranjo protected area was also developed. Defining ecosystem services, an environmental education program, and other baseline elements for this biological community, Reyes Bermúdez emphasized.

The Holguin Provincial Meteorological Center also participates in community activities, environmental commemorations. Also in scientific events, and other initiatives aimed at sharing its work with the public.
