Workshop The City We Want underway in Holguin

The XXII Workshop La ciudad que queremos (The city we want) was inaugurated today on the eve of the 479th anniversary of the foundation of Hato de Holguin and the 304th anniversary of the creation of the town of San Isidro, which will last until April 4th.

The event, which takes place at the headquarters of the National Union of Architects and Construction Engineers in Cuba (Unaic), gathers architects, engineers, urban planners, historians, sociologists, artists and social communicators to promote the exchange and socialization of projects that contribute to strengthen and disseminate the traditions of the eastern city.

Hiram David Pérez Concepción, president of the Union of Historians of Cuba in the territory, in his opening remarks, made reference to the Law for the Protection of Cultural Heritage established in the country, which aims at determining the assets that, due to their special relevance, make up this section in the nation and establish suitable means to take care of them.

Our objective is to project a renewed Cuban City of the Parks to the new generations and we are not satisfied with what we are doing to conserve and improve it, so we must advocate to comply with the Law and thus, work for Holguin, he sentenced.

As part of the program, a key note lecture was given by MSc. Raul Figueredo Reyes, entitled “Where are you city of my life that I cannot find you?”, in which he made a tour of the history of the locality and addressed the consolidation of the territory as an urban space through the development of the system of squares, peculiarity of this province in the country.

Also presented were the papers “A look at the delivery of the Holguin Axe from the photographic collections of the Revolution Square Major General Calixto Garcia”, by Aimee Cabrera and Marlenis Paneque and “Holguin doctors from 1902 to 1952. Presence of the documentary collections of La Periquera Provincial Museum”, by Marlene Martínez, Nélida Peña, Milagro Romero, María de los Ángeles Aguilera and Yaimina Morales.

Sponsored by the Provincial Center of Cultural Heritage of Holguin, the XII Workshop The city we want, promotes urban and architectural development alternatives in the territory, as well as the defense of its historical legacy through exhibitions, exchanges and debates.
