Strong winds caused electrical failures in Mayarí

More than 55 electrical failures in Mayari were counted due to the impact of strong gusts of wind and rains, which in less than 20 minutes affected this municipality of Holguin province on Sunday afternoon.

In view of the effects of this hydrometeorological event, special working teams – engineers and technicians with the corresponding specialized vehicles – immediately acted to repair the damages, informed Yosvani Almira Laurencio, director of the Basic Electric Unit in that locality.

Downed cables, blown transformers, leaning poles and trees on top of the lines were reported among the main damages, said the director.

Likewise, the director of the Unidad Empresarial de Base Constructora Domus Mayarí, Yurixander Barallobre, published on the social network Facebook that the roof of the carpentry station in Guatemala was affected, as well as part of the roof of the main warehouse. The quick action of the Board of Directors made it possible to safeguard the resources and improve some of the damaged structures.

At around three o’clock in the afternoon of March 24, the people from Mayari lived an atypical storm, where strong gusts of wind and intense rain of short duration prevailed, without electrical discharges.

The Institute of Meteorology reported significant accumulated rainfall last Friday in the western and central region, due to numerous downpours, showers and thunderstorms, which became heavy and intense in some localities such as Havana.

These rains were related to a pre-frontal activity, which developed rapidly ahead of a cold front, and which remained over the Gulf of Mexico, together with favorable conditions in the lower and middle levels of the troposphere.
