Soto of Holguin champion in Independence Boxing Cup

José Manuel Soto (80 kg) and two-time national champion Nelson Williams (92 kg) contributed the victories for Cuba in an adverse day for Rogelandy Delís (63.5 kg) and Jorge Daniel Forcades (71 kg), who lost in silver in the final of the Santiago de los Caballeros 2024 Independence Boxing Cup in the Dominican Republic.

Soto won 5-0 over Noel Pacheco and Williams signed a 4-1 decision as opponent of Daniel Guzman, also his victim in the world championship of Tashkent 2023.

Delis lost 0-5 to 2021 world bronze medalist Alexis de la Cruz, and Forcades was knocked out by Jonny Fernandez in the opening round.

Bronzes for Giovis Salfrán (51 kg) and Osvaldo Díaz (57 kg) sealed the access to the podium for all the members of a roster made up of figures in search of consolidation.

The other winners in the men’s segment of the competition were hosts Mario Levegar (51 kg), Lima 2019 Pan American titleholder Rodrigo Marte and José Agustín (+92 kg).

The Dominican Republic National Team was proclaimed champion of the Independence Boxing Cup, which ended the day before at the amphitheater of the Technological University of Santiago.

The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Cuba, Curacao, Ecuador, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Panama and the Dominican Republic participated in the event with the National Team and the representation of Santiago de los Caballeros, host of the event.
