Holguín baseball squad beat Granma to break adverse streak

A strong reaction at the bottom of the ninth inning in the National Baseball Series took the Cachorros of Holguín to score five runs, at Mártires de Barbados stadium, to leave the Alazanes of Granma on the field, 8×7, thus breaking two consecutive losing streaks, that of consecutive defeats which extended to seven and that of victories by their rivals which reached six.

Holguin team, playing as a home club, reached the ninth with a 7×3 disadvantage, where they exploited the relievers Kelbis Rodríguez, Alexei Alarcón (0-2), loser of the game, and Luis Miguel González, who were hit with seven hits and a sacrifice fly.

Yordan Manduley, 5-4 with two RBIs and two RBIs in the game, drove in the tying run with a single, and Edilse Silva, 5-1, brought the decisive run to the plate with a RBI.

Holguin’s batsmen produced fourteen hits, including six two-run homers, Nelson Batista, 3-2 with a double, and rookie Andry Agüero, 4-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run batted in, also stood out.

Left-handed starter Leandro Martínez went six innings in which he allowed two earned runs and five hits and struck out an equal number of batters.

On this occasion, Holguin’s relievers were effective, as Jesús Quintan pitched 2 2/3 episodes without allowing any runs, with two singles, three strikeouts and one ticket, and Ramiro Rodríguez did not allow any runs in three complete innings in which he was hit by only two unhittable pitches.

The victory went to Jose Antonio Sanchez (2-0), who scored two runs, only one clean, in two innings in which he allowed two singles, struck out one hitter and gave away one base.

In the long Sunday day of national baseball, with a total of thirteen games, the Toros de Camagüey extended their winning streak to eight by defeating Guantánamo 1×0 in ten innings, thus coining the first sweep of the series.

After seven successive wins, the Tigres of Ciego de Avila lost 2×3 to the Cocodrilos of Matanzas, but remained at the top of the tournament.

The Vegueros of Pinar del Río continued their winning pace in the series by defeating the Leñadores of Las Tunas twice, 10×0 and 4×1.

The Leopards of Villa Clara also recorded two successes on Sunday with a 5×3 and 4×0 victory over the Gallos of Sancti Spíritus.

The Piratas of La Isla and the Avispas of Santiago de Cuba split, with a 7×5 victory for the former squad and a 6×2 triumph for the latter ones.

Other teams that split in the double-header were Havana’s Industriales and the Elefantes of Cienfuegos. In the sealed game, the southern team won 11×5 and then the capital’s team won 4×3.

Finally, Huracanes of Mayabeque and Cazadores of Artemisa also shared victories and defeats, the former won 5×2 at first and then the Artemiseños won 4×2, with the 300th save in national series for José Ángel García.

The team of Ciego deAvila (10-2) are joined at the top of the standings by Pinar del Río (9-3), Granma, Camagüey and Industriales (8-4) along with La Isla, Las Tunas, Artemisa, Mayabeque and Villa Clara (6-6).

At the bottom of the list are Sancti Spíritus and Matanzas (5-7), Holguín and Santiago de Cuba (4-8), Cienfuegos (3-9) and Guantánamo (2-10).

This Tuesday 26th, the fourth particular games of the baseball league will begin and the Cubs will face Guantanamo Indios at NGuyen Van Troi stadium.
