Celebrations for Cuban Press Day starts as of today

The Day of the Cuban Press starts today with a pilgrimage and the laying of a wreath at the grave of the illustrious Cuban patriot Juan Gualberto Gomez (1854-1933), at the Colon Cemetery in Havana.

The occasion will be an ideal occasion to pay tribute to the 91st anniversary of the death of the Matanzas-born politician and journalist, founder of several journals in Cuba and Spain, and a distinguished personality in the struggles for the independence of the nation.

As reported by the Cuban Journalists Association (UPEC by its Spanish acronym) on its digital social networks, other activities will be held, such as the award ceremony of the Felix Elmusa Distinction and a tribute to outstanding journalists for the International Women’s Day, scheduled for the 7th and 8th of this month, respectively.

The Jose Marti National Journalism Awards and the annual Juan Gualberto Gomez National Journalism Awards will be granted on March 14.

Cuban Press Day is celebrated every March 14 as a tribute to the founding of the newspaper Patria, by Jose Marti, in 1892.

Patria represented an indisputable vehicle for the diffusion of patriotic and revolutionary ideas with a view to the preparation of the Necessary War.
