U.S. band to pay tribute to Holguin-born pianist Frank Fernandez

Metro Big Band, an American group directed by Camp Kirkland, will pay tribute to Holguin-born pianist Frank Fernandez on March 3 with a concert at Jose White Concert Hall in the Cuban province of Matanzas.

According to the information provided by the Hall’s communications and marketing specialist Javier Francisco, the concert will start at 5:00 p.m. local time and will be a tribute by the American band to the 80 years of life and 65 years of artistic career of Fernandez, an outstanding Cuban pianist and composer.

According to the communicator of the Empresa Comercializadora de la Música y los Espectáculos “Rafael Somavilla” Frank is very fond of the province and especially of the Hall, so the opportunity to honor him in the territory becomes a joy and at the same time a great satisfaction.

Metro Big Band is a jazz band with a work that transcends the United States of America, since it has been very well accepted throughout the years with presentations in Europe and Latin America.

The links between Frank Fernandez and José White Concert Hall have been going on for decades but they were strengthened on January 28, 2016 because after being closed to the public for almost 16 years, the Hall opened its doors with the pianist in charge of the reopening together with the Matanzas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Enrique Pérez Mesa, with the performance of the emblematic piece La Bella Cubana.

Frank Fernandez has become an illustrious figure of Cuban music, especially piano music, and his work transcends the national frontier as he has been highly praised by international critics for writing works for different formats such as ballet, symphonic choirs, radio, television, among many other spaces.
