Coral reefs in Holguín protected against climate change

The protection of coral reefs, which are highly vulnerable to climate change, is the main objective of a project developed in the province of Holguin, where one of the largest reserves in the Caribbean area is preserved.

José Miguel Rodríguez Ricardo, specialist and coordinator of the program, stressed to ACN that these ecosystems are sensitive to the indiscriminate fishing of the platform, the variation of water temperature and the proliferation of macroalgae on the seabed.

He emphasized that among the main actions are the monitoring of reef zones to evaluate the level of resilience and the cleaning of the seabed, especially in the summer months when there is a large influx of visitors to the beach resorts.

Also added are the training for the management of these spaces in specialized centers and the reseeding of varieties of the acropora genus and other fragments derived from the corals themselves with a high percent survival rate.

In the eastern territory, the recovery of fire corals, among the most beautiful and attractive for aquatic activities included in tourist packages, is also promoted.

Within the management programs of these ecosystems, the treatment of sewage, which can contaminate the seabed and cause the death of coral polyps, stands out.

Coral reefs are highly sensitive and complex ecosystems, formed by solid calcium carbonate structures that have been growing on the seabed for more than five thousand years and develop at temperatures between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius.

In nature, they act as barriers that protect coastal communities from waves and sea penetrations during storms, hurricanes or tsunamis.
