New Voices of Poetry 2023 Awarded in Holguin

The literature section of the Hermanos Saíz Association in Holguin, Ediciones La Luz, the provincial Radio Angulo station and the Provincial Center of the Book and Literature presented in the culture gathering Peña Abrirse las Constelaciones the prize of the New Voices of Poetry 2023 contest.

In its 28th edition, the contest founded by cultural promoter Joaquin Osorio in 1992, had as jury poets Alberto Peraza (Pinar del Rio), Maylan Alvarez (Matanzas) and Reynaldo Zaldivar (Holguin), who evaluated about thirty notebooks submitted to the contest.

The jury wanted to highlight “the high quality of several of the notebooks presented, the formal and stylistic diversity, the valuable quarry of young poets that have been deployed throughout the island”.

It also decided to award mentions to the notebooks “Metástasis de un poeta”, by Eduardo Daniel Rosell Herrera, for the thematic unity of his texts, the well thought and written, the formal and content balance and the spirit of paying tribute to poetry and culture in general, from a referential discourse that leads to human essences and to “Kalashnikov”, by Erick Gálvez, a book of décimas with a variety in its making, palpable ambitions of transcendence of poetry from a modality that has awakened great interest in young writers, the desire to embrace, from a sonorous universe with metric and rhyme, in most cases, but not attached to the traditional stanza, a world that transcends the mere natural landscape, to enter into the nature of being.

Finally, it unanimously agreed to grant the New Voices of Poetry Award to the book “Foramen”, by Idania Salazar, a collection of poems with a high poetic flight from the everyday, high poetry, an accurate blow to common things as if to attest that the act of poetic creation finds in them a vivid source of universality, spontaneity in the speech and a deep need to be, above all.

Idania Salazar, a medical doctor by profession, received from the hands of Joaquín Osorio the diploma, which was designed from a piece by visual artist Alejandro Zaldívar.

The organizers of the contest thanked the collaboration of the Provincial Film Center in Holguin and, in particular,  Marti movietheater, a space that hosted the special edition of the Peña Abrirse las Constelaciones on the occasion of the awarding of the Nuevas Voces (New Voices).
