Fernando Bacallao receives Electa Arenal Huerta Distinction

Cuban artist Fernando Bacallao Rodriguez, born in Holguin, and resident in the United States of America, was awarded with the Electa Arenal Huerta Distinction, at the closing of the Papermakers Meeting, in the XXI edition of the International Festival of the Ibero-American Culture.

Bacallao, teacher and draftsman is considered the promoter of the papermakers’ meetings and of those techniques with the first ideas on the production of handmade paper that arose in the Regional School of Fine Arts “El Alba” in Holguin.

Graduated from the National School of Art, Bacallao is the pioneer in the studies and tests of the manufacture of paper in a manufactured way from the decade of the 90’s in the Caribbean archipelago.

At the same time, the publishing house Cuadernos Papiro, was recognized with the high distinction, which was received by its director Manuel Arias Silveria, and delivered by PhD. Yuricel Moreno Zaldivar, director of the Provincial Center of Visual Arts in the province.

The publishing imprint run by the Cuban Fund for Cultural Goods (FCBC), creates collections of Books-Art with about 100 print runs per title. They have a wide participation in Book Fairs in Latin America, among them in Mexico. It currently holds a mega-exhibition at the University of Albani in the U.S.A. Works from this imprint are treasured at the Library of Congress in Washington.

Cuadernos Papiro was once again the venue for the Papermakers Meeting, with the participation of American artists.

To close the Papermakers Meeting, the Provincial Center of Visual Arts inaugurated an exhibition of the works created by the papermakers in the workshops held during the days of the International Festival of Iberoamerican Culture.
