Cisat expands technical services for environmental protection

The Holguin Center for Research and Environmental Services (Cisat) is expanding its services in this eastern territory, as part of the programs to contribute to the protection of the environment.

Wilder Carmenate Reyes, director of the institution, told the Cuban News Agency that the services include the ecosystemic valuation of the coastal zone, one of the strategies prioritized by the science sector.

He indicated that this program allows diagnosing the conditions of the coast and influencing decision-making by local governments, taking into account the prospects of sustainable development and tourism in the province of Holguín.

He emphasized that the monitoring of beaches is also added, as part of the Tarea Vida, the Cuban State’s plan to confront climate change, which includes the coastline, the volume of sand and the area of exposure to the sun.

These systems, classified as vulnerable, also benefit from reforestation with native varieties, the relocation of housing and state institutions built on the sand dunes, and environmental education activities.

Cisat also promotes projects for the exploitation of coral reefs and the control of invasive exotic species such as lionfish and other branches, including archeology.

This center, founded by Rosa Elena Simeón, then minister of the Environment, works to solve the country’s problems, including desertification, drought, loss of biological biodiversity and pollution, among others.
