On the occasion of the celebration of the 61st anniversary of the Rodrigo Prats Lyric Theater of Holguin, founded on November 16, 1962 by baritone Raul Camayd, today’s director, soprano Liudmila Perez Lopez, agreed to talk exclusively for this portal from the Eddy Suñol Theater.

How have you devised the 61st anniversary season?

“Sixty-one years that have not been easy. But very loving, we think collectively. We are thinking of a broad anniversary that reaches municipalities. Not like before with big shows. Yes, with young soloists that reach every little piece where the lyric has always reached. We will go to the Plaza de Mayarí, to the municipality of Jesús Menéndez, in Las Tunas, to the land of María Dolores Rodríguez (Lola). Also to my homeland [Chaparra]. We have a graduate of ours there.

“At the same time it is very important to visit the grave of our teacher Raul Camayd, to pay our respects to them again, to tell them that we are here always trying to be on stage. That is what would make him very happy.”

What works will be on stage from the theater?

“We will be doing collaborations with colleagues in the province. At the same time we will have tours of works from our repertoire over the years. We will have two nights of galas, concerts, shows.”

“We will be collaborating with colleagues in the province. At the same time we will have journeys through works of our repertoire over the years. We will have two nights of galas, concerts, shows.” Zarzuela has been a genre defended since the foundation of the company by Camayd, with the first work “Los gavilanes”. What will be the proposal for the theater on the occasion?

“We are going to reprise the Zarzuela “María La O”, which was so well liked in the recent staging. We will do it with young people who will make their debut and we will be proposing the casts. We will have the teacher Isabel Torres, in María La O”.

In the beginnings of the Teatro Lírico, Maestro Camayd and the founding figures performed on natural stages. At 61 years old, is it possible to resume it?

“Yes, we have organized activities close to the Casa del Ballet. We will visit old people’s homes to bring our work. At the same time we will be in public squares, so that the people who do not usually go to the theater can see the Lírico up close, with excerpts from our shows.”

In the lyric seasons you usually share with national guests, will you have them this time?

“Unfortunately so far we can’t talk about national guests. And we would love to have them. It would be our future dream”.

Liudmila Pérez López had the fortune of learning from maestro Camayd and founding figures of the company, among them Náyade Proenza and María Luisa Clark.

Besides being the director of the Teatro Lírico de Holguín, she alternates responsibilities as a teacher at the Conservatory of Music José María Ochoa and the Branch of the Higher Institute of Arts (ISA).
