Pieces of Cuban heritage inscribed on the International Memory of the World Register

Unesco’s Executive Council approved on Thursday the inscription of the “Cuban Cinema Poster Collection” and “The Chapter Acts of the Havana City Hall” in the International Memory of the World Register, dedicated to the preservation, access and protection of the documentary heritage of humanity.

The approval took place during the session of the Program and External Relations Commission of the 216th session of Unesco’s Executive Board, which examined a total of 64 nominations.

Following the approval of the Cuban nominations, Cuba’s ambassador to Unesco, Yahima Esquivel, thanked Unesco’s Executive Board for the approval and the International Advisory Committee of the Memory of the World Program for the positive review. She also reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to the protection and management of documentary heritage, as well as to promoting access to it.

Historic day for Cuba’s documentary heritage

In his Twitter account, President Díaz-Canel noted that this is a historic day for Cuban documentary heritage and congratulated the team that made possible the inscription in the International Memory of the World Register.

Cuban film posters, a collection of nearly three thousand pieces, were also recognized as Cultural Heritage of the Cuban nation through Resolution 40 of 2018, issued by the National Council of Cultural Heritage, and they are in the National Register of Unesco’s Memory of the World Program for their cultural and artistic value.

Among the emblematic posters that got the endorsement of the international organization are those that represented worldwide such important films as Lucía (1968, Humberto Solás), Clandestinos (1988, Fernando Pérez), Vampiros en La Habana (1985, Juan Padrón) and Fresa y chocolate (1993, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío).

The Chapter Records of the Havana City Hall comprise a set of 273 books from 1550 to 1898.
