Gibara International Film Festival 2023, beyond the cinematographic stage

Gibara International Film Festival 2023 is about start (1rst to 5th of August ), that is why, the organizing committee puts forward some details of the program of this 17th edition.

This encounter of the seventh art is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the founding of the event created by Humberto Solás, an artistic need embodied in the Manifesto of Low Budget Cinema, which reaffirms itself as a multicultural and cinematographic space.

At the opening gala actor Luis Alberto García and costume designer Violeta Cooper will be recognized with the Lucia de Honor awards, as well as Jorge Perugorría, honorary president of the festival, for his great contribution to maintaining Solás’ dream.

Although the official program may change, the members of the jury, the official selection of works and the main talents to be presented are already known.

Film Programming

Cynthia Deus, coordinator of the festival since 2022, said that 350 works were registered for this edition, from which an official selection was made and will be evaluated by filmmaker Alejandro Gil, president of the fiction jury, while Catherine Murphy and Rafael Grillo preside over the documentary, animation and press sections, respectively.

“We will have collateral juries such as the Cine Clubs Jury, chaired by Lázaro L. Alderete and the Youth Jury, which will be made up of 12 members, with gender parity, and six of them from Gibara.”

Special presentations are announced such as song-writer and singer Silvio Rodriguez; as well as My First Task by Catherine Murphy, Last Dance by Delphine Lehericey and Princess by Roberto De Paolis, while feature films include Fernando Perez’s El mundo de Nelsito, Kiki Alvarez’s Bajo un sol poderoso and Daniel Ross’ La espera.

In Animation we will be La Super, by Ernesto Piña and Era nomeolvides, by Carlos A. Rodríguez on the Cuban side, as well as Keradó, from Colombia; Mimosa from Belgium and Mao Lucky, from Panama, just to mention a few.

The gender theme cuts across the entire Festival. That is why we have included a tribute to Sara Gomez, so we will screen the film De cierta manera and a selection of her works,” said Sergio Benvenuto Solás, director of FIC Gibara.

“In addition, we will bring to Gibara the exhibition Mujeres en mayúsculas (Women in capital letters), from CartelON project, presented in the recently celebrated “Month of French Culture”, which brings together 24 posters by Cuban women designers, of different themes and printed in silkscreen.”

Gibara, a sea of arts

Yakelín Tapia Aguilera, director of the Holguín Provincial Film Center, highlighted the significance of the event for the province, “especially because in addition to enjoying the cinematographic proposals, the local artistic talent joins the celebration”.

As usual, the Gibara International Film Festival will offer a variety of theatrical proposals, for children and adults, and spaces for dance where the staging of Vital Teatro, Meseras; Favez, by Argos Teatro and Ensamble, directed by Maricel Godoy, with actors from Palabras al viento y lyric voices, stand out”.

René de la Cruz, in charge of the artistic program that is being developed at the same time as that related to the seventh art, said that there will be a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Nueva Trova with the presence of Ariel Barreiro, Manuel Alejandro, Norberto Leyva, in addition to the presentations of Toques del Río, Jotabarrioz, Luis Alberto Barbería and Fígaro Jazz Club, Adonis and Osaín del Monte, among others.

The strong presence of trova and jazz is complemented by the presentation of the Holguín Symphonic Orchestra with a version of its show Cinema, interpretation of soundtracks of famous films.

Children will also enjoy a concert by singer-songwriter Edelis Loyola, as well as performances by the company La Colmenita, which will come to Gibara for the first time with the show Cinderella according to The Beatles, in addition to visiting Moa and the children’s theater group by the same name there.
