UHo-Belgium Partnership Boosts Clean Energy and Postgraduate Studies

The internationalization strategy of the University of Holguin (UHo) and the northeastern region continues to build bridges for academic and scientific cooperation on a global scale. During a recent, productive visit to Belgium, the institutional delegation strengthened ties with the Flemish Interuniversity Council. Through high-level exchanges focused on sustainable development, technological innovation, and doctoral training.

A highlight of the agenda was the meeting held with Dr. Bernard Vanheusden, Rector of Hasselt University. An institution that is part of the academic consortium for the IUC (Institutional University Cooperation) project.

During the meeting, the coordinators of this initiative—funded by the Flemish organization. Outlined the general workstreams guiding this multidimensional project.

Additionally, Dr. Liesbeth Huybrechts, a professor at Hasselt University and leader of the sub-project dedicated to smart governance. She elaborated on the scope, objectives, and methodologies characterizing this strategic area.

A direct outcome of these discussions was the signing of a framework collaboration agreement. This agreement opens up valuable opportunities for the local scientific community. With a focus on professional development and postgraduate training for researchers through a joint PhD program.

The academic agenda in Belgium continued with a working visit to the EnergyVille research center. Located at the Thor Park technology campus in the city of Genk. The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Wilmar Martínez, leader of the sub-project focused on smart energy.

EnergyVille stands out on the European stage as an internationally renowned center for the study of sustainable energy and smart energy systems. Its strength lies in the strategic integration of top-tier academic and research institutions. Such as KU Leuven, the VITO institute, and Hasselt University itself.

A tour of the cutting-edge laboratories and facilities allowed university representatives to gain firsthand insight into projects with global impact. Spanning areas such as smart grids, advanced energy storage technologies, energy efficiency in buildings, and district-level thermal and electrical systems.

A highlight of the visit was the direct engagement with the Thor Park ecosystem. This site offers a tangible example of industrial revitalization and sustainability. Also where the region’s historic mining heritage coexists harmoniously with technology parks and state-of-the-art laboratories.

Moreover the experience serves as a practical model for transforming historical legacy into a driving force for the transition toward clean, sustainable energy systems.

Through these international academic engagement initiatives, the university reaffirms its commitment to strengthening national scientific capabilities. For generating knowledge with social impact, and showcasing its professionals on the global stage of advanced scientific research.
