The Cuban baseball team defeated the Dominican Republic 9-6 this morning and advanced undefeated to the super round of the tournament at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026.
After previously beating Curacao and Puerto Rico, those led by Germán Mesa relied on an 11-hit offensive to defeat the hosts and secure first place in group A heading to the decisive phase. Also where the medals of the oldest regional multi-sport event in the world will be discussed.
The Cubans opened the scoring from the very first inning, capitalizing on a couple of defensive errors by their rivals to score three runs. One driven by a single by Leonel Moas Jr. and two more RBIs by another undisputed hit by Henry Quintero. A hit that also caused starter Enny Romero to leave the mound.
In the fourth inning, they added another score to reliever Luis Peña’s tally after stringing together three hits, including an RBI by Yoel Yanqui. However, minutes later, the Dominicans equalized the challenge with a four-run rally.
Randy Cueto left the mound with two runners in circulation and his substitute, Andy Vargas. Issued a walk and allowed a double by Ricardo Céspedes that cleared the loaded bases. Yunieski García, after tolerating an RBI hit by Julio Rodríguez, finally managed to put out the fire.
Evenly matched, they reached the eighth and, after applying the tiebreaker rule. Those from the largest of the Antilles, after two outs, created a devastating five-run package to reach a definitive advantage.
Armando Dueñas, who pitched the last two innings, took credit for the challenge. After withstanding an unstoppable hit by Céspedes when picking up the bats, which drove in two teammates.
This Monday, all the teams classified for the super round—Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic for key A. As well as Panama, Nicaragua and Colombia for key B—will enjoy a day off. Only the match between Curacao and Mexico will be played, in which seventh place in the tournament will be defined.
