The Challenges of Collecting Retirement Pensions

Collecting retirement pensions, considered a right and a social guarantee. It has become a process marked by uncertainty and waiting for many pensioners in Holguin. Worse still, this reality repeats itself month after month at various bank branches throughout the province.

From the early hours, lines begin to form, comprised of elderly people. Many with health and physical limitations, who remain outdoors for hours. Their expectation is singular: to access money that is already rightfully theirs. However, the response is not always immediate.

Limited cash availability is among the main factors contributing to the difficulties in providing this service. Added to this are interruptions due to connection problems and a high concentration of users at certain branches. Which complicates the process and prolongs waiting times.

The alternatives being promoted by the banking system focus on diversifying payment methods. Incorporating non-state economic actors and utilizing digital platforms. However, these options still do not reach all beneficiaries. In a context where technological gaps, electricity shortages, and limitations in available infrastructure persist.

Ensuring pension payments are received under appropriate conditions is not only a matter of banking organization. It also requires a broader perspective on protecting a vulnerable population sector that depends, to a large extent, on the efficiency of these processes.
