The Cuban diaspora is now called upon to contribute to the development of the archipelago. Stated Enrique Portuondo, pro tempore president of the Network of Cuban Residents in Latin America and the Caribbean, in Montevideo.
He made this statement to Prensa Latina at the conclusion of the eighth regional meeting of the group, held in the capital. The meeting brought together delegates from nine countries in person, with others participating virtually.
Portuondo said the forum was held on an extraordinary basis. Due to the difficult conditions imposed by the intensified U.S. blockade against the island.
It was also convened in light of the measures adopted by the Cuban government. Which, among other objectives, encourage the participation of emigrants in the transformation and recovery of the economy.
I believe that holding this regional meeting in Uruguay comes at an opportune moment. When more than ever there has been a call for Cubans abroad to contribute in any area. In economic, political, social, cultural, and sporting, he noted.
He emphasized that the forum in Montevideo allowed them to “strengthen and amplify the call made by the highest leadership of the Cuban Revolution.”
“Cubans who reside anywhere in the world today have the responsibility to participate in the transformation of our country. To strengthen socialism, and to implement the measures adopted by the government,” he stated.
In this regard, he urged everyone to join, strengthen, and unify associations of compatriots abroad. And to appeal to “our supportive friends through solidarity campaigns from all over the world.”
He asserted that Cubans in Argentina, Nicaragua, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and the Dominican Republic, among other countries. They have responded to the call made from Havana.
The associations and the network itself are tasked with uniting Cubans. Disseminating information, making our voices heard on social media, and working together. With our embassies and consulates to develop activities that engage them.
“We live outside the land of our birth, but we will continue to contribute to the country that shaped us. And it is now resisting an inhumane blockade,” Portuondo added.
He stated that it is about love for the homeland and for a better future for his compatriots. Which includes “defending sovereignty and the principles bequeathed to us by the historical leaders of the Cuban Revolution.”
