Matanzas: Champion of the 64th National Baseball Series

Powered by their offense and Yamichel Pérez’s pitching. Matanzas defeated Las Tunas 11-0 today to win the 64th National Baseball Series.

As in three of the four games, the Crocodiles decided the final in the first inning. Scoring seven runs in the first inning, three in the second. Adding another in the fifth to lift the title, just as they did in the 2019-2020 season.

The Matanzas team, second in the qualifying stage, finished the postseason with a record of 12 wins and only two losses. After sweeping Sancti Spiritus 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Defeating Industriales 4-2 in the semifinals, and sweeping Los Leñadores in the championship game.

From the mound, Pérez capitalized on his teammates’ offensive advantage, pitching a solid start. Allowing no runs, only five hits, and striking out four, two of them in the seventh inning.

Offensively, the Matanzas team collected 16 hits against five opposing pitchers. With first baseman and cleanup hitter Ariel Martínez standing out, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

The team managed by Armando Ferrer also celebrated the productivity of catcher Andrys Pérez, who went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Outfielder José Amaury Noroña, who went 2-for-4, including a double and two RBIs. And third baseman Luis Ángel Sánchez, who went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Despite the loss, the Lumberjacks reached the podium for the seventh time in the last decade. Coming close to a three-peat after their victories in 2023 and 2024.
