Cacocum was one of the municipalities in Holguin province most affected by Hurricane Melissa. Therefore, a new hurricane, this time of humanity and health, comprised of nearly one hundred professionals from approximately 18 specialties. Including clinical and surgical, mental health, and medical students, recently traveled there to care for the population in need.
Maritza Pérez, a diabetic and hypertensive patient who received care, emphasized how important the arrival of the various specialists was for them in Cristino Naranjo. A town far from the municipal capital.

In this regard, Dr. Julio Yamel Verdecia Reyes, General Director of Health, stated that as part of the tasks assigned to them by the Ministry of Public Health. They are focused on bringing a true hurricane of humanity to communities affected by Melissa.

“We carried out a different type of intervention, a large-scale effort led by experts but with a tremendous connection to our youth. We are doing promotional and preventative work so that our people know how to continue taking care of themselves and adopt a series of measures to avoid getting sick.”
The director added that more than 100 health professionals arrived in Cacocum at a time when psychological support. Also medical assistance, and hygiene and epidemiological expertise are most needed in the recovery efforts.

Medical care was divided between the Rubén Batista health area, in the center of the city of Cacocum. The Cristino Naranjo health area, the latter located more than 10 kilometers from the city, which suffered extensive flooding.
Dr. René Núñez Inza, a pediatric oncologist, traveled to Cacocum because he believes that public health should always be at the forefront. Having been affected by the hurricane, he is contributing, through his modest efforts. For restoring the health of children and adolescents in need of medical attention.

For several days now, a ministerial team led by Dr. Julio Guerra Izquierdo, Director of Medical Records and Statistics at the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), has been in Holguin, assisting the areas most affected by this weather event.
Hence, he explained that the Ministry of Public Health’s support began long before the first phases of the hurricane response were declared. Later, once the Defense Council was activated and during the Recovery pase. It was decided to send teams to the affected provinces.
“Here we have a mixed team made up of epidemiologists, medical and mental health professionals to help in the recovery of all those affected,” he stated.

Visits to evacuation centers and the homes of those affected have been planned. Eloína Arzuaga Arzuaga, 60, is another resident of Cristino Naranjo who visited the angiologist, expressing her gratitude for not having to leave her home for treatment: “It’s wonderful because I used to have to go to Cacocum to see the angiologist because I have lymphangitis in my leg, and it’s marvelous not having to spend money on transportation. Getting to Cacocum with a health problem like mine is sometimes an ordeal,” she emphasized.

Initiatives like these are very welcome and necessary for the residents. Part of the UNICEF donation made days earlier was also delivered to the most affected health institutions and the community.
