The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) advocated for gender equality in the Cuban agri-food sector. During a national workshop of the Nutrivida project, held in Holguin.
The meeting took place at the Desembarco del Granma Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS) in the Guayabo community council of Mayari. It was attended by producers and farmers and addressed the implementation of the plan. Aimed at ensuring food and nutritional security for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children up to 12 years old.
Sabdiel Prieto Rodríguez, a program assistant with the World Food Programme (WFP) specializing in nutrition. Explained to the Cuban News Agency that Nutrivida. Implemented in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It is being carried out in municipalities of Mayabeque and Holguin provinces. Its purpose is to link production methods with social protection networks. Also to ensure the availability, access, and sustainability of food for vulnerable groups.
Prieto Rodríguez emphasized that a gender equity approach is integrated throughout the initiative. For this reason, awareness-raising workshops are being conducted for local stakeholders. To transform agricultural practices and dismantle traditional gender roles. This fosters an equitable environment where everyone participates according to their abilities and knowledge.
Yuliet Burgo Marrero, the national coordinator for the Ministry of Agriculture, noted that the goal is to generate commitments among cooperative members to replicate what they have learned and create spaces. Also where women gain visibility and recognition, translating the training into concrete actions in their communities.
Héctor Daniel Cutiño Court, president of the CCS (Credit and Service Cooperative). He valued the fact that the event reinforces practices of equality and cooperation in the home and in production. Something that constitutes his daily reality with his wife.
Using a methodology of collective participation and equity, the event included activities that highlighted everyone’s contribution to agricultural work. Promoted the leadership of women and young people up to 35 years old by inviting them to present economic empowerment initiatives with the organization’s support.
