Waterworks underway to benefit the city of Holguin

The installation of a new pipeline will allow for greater utilization of the Cacoyugüin Dam’s water volumen. Benefiting more than 85,000 customers in the northern part of Holguin, an area among the most affected by high water cycles.

As part of the work, the steel pipeline for the discharge pipeline was installed in recent days. The first shutoff valve was installed and repaired, Rafael Montero, a specialist from the Territorial Delegation of Water Resources, told CNA.

Montero added that work is underway on the access road and the construction of a new structure to house the pump. With the goal of shortening schedules and reactivating service as quickly as posible. Especially in areas where rotations exceed 70 days.

In parallel, the rehabilitation of the main pumping station is progressing, with the repair of the inlet tunnel, the ram system, and the dismantling of the well pipes, he explained.

In addition, through an agreement with the Heroes of July 26th Mechanical Company, the horizontal turbines of this system are being restored, allowing for greater supply efficiency.

Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate for the sector, specified that the investment, exceeding 50 million pesos, will take advantage of the volume below the 72-meter mark of the dam. Where the current pumping reaches, thereby extending the reservoir’s water coverage.

Holguin is one of the Cuban provinces most affected by the intense drought, for which an action plan is being implemented, primarily in the provincial capital, which includes the recovery of local sources. Alternatives aimed at reducing consumption in hospitals and economic and service centers, and the rehabilitation of the main pumping stations.

At the same time, feasibility studies are being conducted for well drilling. Also the water supply via pipeline continues, and science and technological innovation are being applied to offer solutions to the equipment and spare parts shortage.
