The province of Holguin participates in the IV Patria International Colloquium, which takes place since Monday at the University of Havana.
The event, with around 400 delegates from Cuba and 47 other countries, is attended by a representation of six delegates from the Cuban City of Parks, who will contribute their experiences on digital platforms as tools for social mobilization, the role of content, political participation and the formation of power, among other topics present in this edition.
The Holguin delegation to “Patria” is composed of Geovannys Jiménez, Head of the Ideological Department of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguin; José Enrique Agüero, president of the Association of Social Communicators in the province; Faustino Fonseca, Director of Information and Social Communication; in addition to Natalia Díaz and Diuvichen Vila, provincial directors of radio and television in that order, together with Maribel Flamand, director of the weekly ¡Ahora!
According to Natalia Díaz Riverón, director of the Provincial Radio System in Holguin and delegate to the event, in one of the meetings on Monday, specifically, the “Meeting of Ministers and High Government Representatives for Information and Social Communication”, in addition to Cuban delegates, representatives of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Mexico, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Cuba, among other senior figures who underlined the critical relevance of the new of new technologies in the current global context, especially for countries in the global south.
In this panel, the Senator and Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines highlighted the urgency of investing in digital infrastructure and technological literacy to overcome access, gender and language barriers.
Meanwhile, the Venezuelan Minister emphasized the need to confront technology with sovereign policies that counteract its historically warlike origin and promote its own narratives, Díaz Riverón explained.
Organized by the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC), with the collaboration of Casa de las Américas, the Hermanos Saíz Association and the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), the International Colloquium “Patria” offers a space for communicators, academics, politicians, activists and interested citizens to reflect on the opportunities and challenges presented by techno-politics.
This edition of the colloquium, which will run until next Wednesday, is dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the multi-state channel Telesur, founded by the Commanders of Cuba (Fidel Castro) and Venezuela (Hugo Chávez), as well as the fortieth anniversary of the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana.
