Local Food System Project Expands in Rafael Freyre

The World Food Programme (WFP) is expanding in the Holguin municipality of Rafael Freyre with the second phase of its local food project, “Act Differently!”. Aimed at strengthening food systems in eastern Cuba.

The initiative, sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Also it covers the districts of Yateras, Río Cauto, Songo-La Maya, and Jesús Menéndez. Moreover the WFP official in Cuba, Luis Plácido Ortega, reported that the organization supports producers by providing supplies, equipment, and technical training. This support aims to ensure that supplies come directly from the agricultural areas of the beneficiary municipalities.

Ortega explained that the project supports local authorities in building capacity and providing tools for supply management. He also emphasized that the central focus of the actions lies in strengthening the resilience of agricultural systems. In the face of economic challenges and climate change.

In this phase, agricultural cooperatives were linked with the corresponding social institutions. Individualized strengthening plans were designed.

The initial stage of the local food project, “Act Differently!”, implemented over five years in five other eastern municipalities. Benefited 52 social protection entities and thousands of people.
