Early detection is key to slowing the progression of glaucoma and preventing blindness, warns this Wednesday one of the messages for World Glaucoma Day, which also urges ophthalmological control.
On World Glaucoma Day, the invitation is to have an ophthalmological check-up and to spread the importance of this disease that can be devastating if not treated in time, they warn.
Since 2008, every March 12, messages of reflection have been sent for World Glaucoma Day, to raise awareness about this eye disease that can cause progressive vision loss.
It is a group of more than 60 pathologies that affect the optic nerve and, if not treated in time, can lead to irreversible blindness.
Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness in people over 60 years of age, although it can manifest itself at any age, it is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain.
In many cases, the disease progresses without obvious symptoms until the damage is severe. For this reason, specialists emphasize the importance of regular ophthalmological check-ups for early detection.
Elevated intraocular pressure is the main risk factor for glaucoma, but the disease can develop even with normal eye pressure.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the main cause of glaucoma is increased intraocular pressure due to a buildup of aqueous humor, the fluid that circulates inside the eye.
This fluid drains through a structure called the drainage angle. However, when this mechanism does not work properly, eye pressure increases and causes damage to the nerve fibers of the optic nerve. If this deterioration progresses without treatment, blind spots in vision and eventually total blindness occur.
