The most important thing is water, but land, but it is not being produced, said Salvador Valdés Mesa, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and Vice President of the Republic, on a working visit to the province of Holguin.
As part of a tour of entities in charge of guaranteeing the people‘s food locally, Valdés arrived in the municipalities of Mayari and Baguanos where he checked the progress of grain cultivation, which has not yet reached the required indicators, and that of the harvest.
During his time at the Agroindustrial Agroindustrial Business Unit (UEB in the Spanish acronym) of Grains of Mayari, he exchanged with workers of the institution and was interested in the performance and projections of the municipal entity in the constitution of self-consumption farms and livestock units, as well as the contracting of productive forms.
Upon learning that the entity has about three thousand land holders, Valdés insisted that the incorporation of farmers should not stop until the markets are supplied with all the food items that Cubans need for adequate nutrition.
In the Mayaricero popular council of Guaro, a site where around 140 hectares of rice land corresponding to the institution are cultivated, the member of the Political Bureau spoke with the usufructuary Félix Zayas Castillo, 72 years old.
With five hectares used in the work, the tenant reported that he has obtained a figure of more than two tons without using chemical fertilizers and the development of the harvest mainly by hand.
The leader added that planting is the only way to reduce expensive imports and provide the regulated family basket and called for the increase of by products that avoid price inflation and allow the obtaining of benefits for the farmer.
He also urged to take advantage of the location of the UEB, in the vicinity of the East-West Transfer, with the hydraulic resource guaranteed throughout the year, to diversify crops and promote livestock breeding from which a group of value added inputs are obtained that are in greater demand in sectors such as tourism.
The work agenda included a visit to the Fernando de Dios Power Plant, in Baguanos, where he was concerned about the causes of the delay in the milling process, including the low availability of water and the appearance of leaks in pipes.
Before which he commented that for Holguin, a province with one million inhabitants, the prompt resumption of this industrial activity is vital.
The mills have to manufacture sugar, he said, adding that the northeastern region exhibits one of the highest yields in sugarcane agriculture in the country, so the resource is available, it is only necessary to exploit it and rescue the historical past of the Holguin mill, the only one that this time participates in the campaign.
In conclusion the Vice President was accompanied by Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the province; Yunia Pérez Hernández, deputy governor of Holguin, among other government authorities.
