Mental well-being in adolescents, an unheeded cry

In the age of hyperconnection and social media, where life seems to be a perfect filter, teens’ mental health has become a silent crisis.

The academic pressure to get good grades and ensure a “successful” future generates stress and anxiety. The influence of social media, with its unrealistic beauty standards and constant comparison, undermines self-esteem and promotes negative body image.

Bullying, both face-to-face and online, leaves deep scars that can last a lifetime. The lack of communication at home, the absence of safe spaces to talk about their emotions, further aggravates the situation.

But all is not lost. There are solutions and strategies that can make a difference in your lives. Prioritize emotional education, incorporate emotional education programs in schools, which teach adolescents to identify, express and regulate their emotions, develop resilience skills and build healthy relationships.

Promote open communication at home, creating safe spaces where teens feel comfortable talking about their concerns, without judgment or interruption. Actively listen, validate their emotions, and offer unconditional support.

Physical exercise releases endorphins, reduces stress and improves mood. Spending time outdoors, connecting with nature, also has positive effects on mental health.
Limit screen time and promote responsible use of social media, setting clear limits on time spent on social media and promoting responsible use of technology. Encourage alternative activities that stimulate creativity, social interaction, and personal development.

In addition, breaking down stigma and promoting the search for professional help is an important step. Normalize the search for psychological help and provide clear and accessible information about available resources. Create awareness campaigns that break down stigma and promote empathy and understanding.

The mental well-being of adolescents is everyone’s responsibility: parents, educators, health professionals, politicians and society in general, we must join forces to create an environment that promotes their emotional health and gives them the necessary tools to face life’s challenges.
