The delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in Holguin reports on the implementation of actions under “Life Task”. The state’s plan for addressing climate change specifically regarding watersheds. The province reports the complete reforestation of the protective buffer zones along reservoirs, rivers, and canals in prioritized areas.
The Cauto watershed has a forest cover of 19.5 percent, spanning 48,670 hectares, according to the latest assessment of forest dynamics.
In the Mayari watershed, the forest cover index decreased from 50.3 to 50.1 percent due to the impact of a major fire in Pinares de Mayari. Nevertheless, the recovery of these areas is progressing gradually.
In the Sagua watershed, the protective strip along the Sagua River requires the planting of 19 hectares this year. Much of this land belongs to local farmers. To date, 31.58 percent of the plan has been completed.
Mangrove recovery has reached a 98 percent level of ecological health. More than one hectare has been reforested, and the province’s total forest cover has increased by over 2,000 hectares. Furthermore, more than 4,000 hectares of agricultural land have been protected through reforestation and conservation techniques.
Geovani Zaldívar Martínez, the deputy delegate for the Environment at Citma in Holguin. He explained that efforts in these watersheds focus on eliminating gullies, planting trees, and providing environmental education to young people. Despite progress, challenges remain. The fire in Pinares de Mayari continues to affect the forest cover in this watershed.
The fragmentation of water-regulating buffer zones due to diverse land tenure arrangements, hinders reforestation efforts in certain areas.
Public awareness regarding the actual impacts of climate change remains an area that requires further attention. As do the cleaning of rivers and the protection of threatened areas all of which await effective solutions.
The “Life Task” initiative demonstrates that climate change adaptation in Holguin is built at the local level. Grounded in scientific data, sustained investment, and community engagement.
Every reforested hectare serves as an additional barrier against erosion, drought, and the loss of biodiversity.
The global climate crisis is being addressed in this territory through concrete actions. With the protection of watersheds standing out as one of the most urgent priorities.
Without forests to retain water and protect the soil, the future of water resources in Holguin becomes uncertain.
