The Neonatology Service at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Teaching Hospital is prioritizing the professional development of its staff in neonatal hemodynamics. An essential discipline in the care of this vulnerable population.
Ana Nastia Tamayo, head of the service at the hospital, explained to the Cuban News Agency (CNA) that this tool allows for the monitoring of the newborn’s vascular behavior, a decisive factor in their development.
She emphasized that patients with intrauterine growth restriction admitted to the service have a vascular system adapted to chronic hypoxia.
Also she explained that this condition causes blood flow to be redistributed. Affecting vital organs such as the intestines and kidneys, and prioritizing cerebral perfusion. Thus requiring constant monitoring to improve infant survival rates.
Tamayo pointed out that knowledge of this discipline allows doctors to implement personalized therapies. According to the conditions of each case and mitigate kidney damage.
Moreover to that end, ultrasounds are regularly performed on premature newborns in the skin-to-skin room. To check the condition of their organs and facilitate adequate distribution of oxygen and nutrients.
