La Melba, a rural mountain community in the Holguin municipality of Moa, is currently undergoing a social and energy transformation. Driven by the installation of more than fifty photovoltaic systems in its homes. In the intricate geography of the Sierra del Cristal, where the verdant mountains define the horizon. With distances often accentuate daily challenges, sunlight has begun to write a new chapter.

The initiative is part of the Former Project, an international cooperation program. Focused on developing renewable energy sources in hard-to-reach areas of Holguin province. With a target of 96 systems assigned to this community. The arrival of solar technology guarantees a stable, clean, and sovereign electricity service, independent of fossil fuels.
At the heart of this project lies its direct impact on family life, and particularly on rural women. Traditionally responsible for supporting their households in mountain settlements. Also the constant availability of energy alleviates domestic chores, facilitates food preservation. It raises the quality of life in communities where access to the National Electric System (SEN) is difficult due to the terrain.
The Former Project, which in the Holguin province also benefits communities in the municipalities of Banes, Gibara, Cueto, and Frank País. It is in its final stage of implementation. This collective effort reaffirms the commitment of the Cuban State and its international partners. To bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas. Guaranteeing fundamental rights in the most remote parts of the country.
While the remaining equipment is being installed, La Melba demonstrates the tangible reach of science and solidarity applied to the community. In the mountainous municipality of Moa, harnessing solar power is becoming a sure path toward economic sustainability, social equity, and energy sovereignty.
