Former Project Benefits Mountain Communities in Holguin

The community of La Melba, located in a remote area of the Holguin municipality of Moa. It has the necessary resources to begin installing the photovoltaic systems planned for the Former project this week.

According to Fernando Hechavarría Pupo, director of the Renewable Energy Sources Unit of the Holguin Electric Company. Everything is ready for the crews to begin installing the 96 solar kits. With capacities of 1kW and 2kW, which will transform the daily lives of its residents.

Of these, 85 systems will be installed in private homes and the rest in community institutions. In addition, solar pumping systems will be implemented to guarantee access to water. Public lighting will be installed in common areas, significantly improving the quality of basic services in the community.

Alongside the work being done in La Melba, the Former project plans to install another 140 solar systems in homes in the municipalities of Banes, Gibara, Cueto, and Frank País. This will replace broken equipment or complete installations that have been pending for a long time. Thus extending the reach of this initiative to several areas of the province.

These systems offer a viable and sustainable alternative for communities that have previously relied on conventional energy sources with limited supply.

One of the distinguishing features of the Former project is its gender equity approach. Its strategy prioritizes the direct benefit of women in the participating communities. As part of a broader goal of social development and women’s empowerment.

The program, which is in its final stage, aims to complete all pending installations within the established deadlines. Ensuring that the commitments made to each beneficiary area are fulfilled before the end of September.
