Yudit Almeida’s story at CMKO Radio Angulo began back in 2008. When she graduated with a degree in Philology and Literature from the University of Oriente in Santiago de Cuba.
While doing her community service in Holguin, she learned about a call for applications for a journalism retraining program; but it wasn’t that simple. To participate, she had to be affiliated with a media outlet. So she went to speak with Moraima López León, the then-provincial director of radio in Holguin, to request a job at Radio Angulo.
It turned out that the available position was for a journalist. That’s how she started in radio. First as a writer, then working on the website, until, due to the needs of the news department, she became a reporter. Covering different sectors and contributing daily to all the station’s news programs.
Her first journalistic sources were political, mass, and student organizations. She continued in this role for several months until Magda Betancourt Parra, who worked in healthcare, retired.
So how did she come to cultural journalism? The change came after Lidia Esther Ochoa retired. It is through her reports on this sector that we have known Yudit for a long time. She affirms that contributing information from the cultural sector involves a great deal of work. Due to the number of events held throughout the year in the province of Holguin.
To this day, Yudit, who is also a correspondent for Radio Havana Cuba, recalls coverages that have marked her career. Also that have contributed to pushing her to be more professional. To cherish fond memories, and for which she is eternally grateful to Radio Angulo.
Among these special assignments was the visit of Pope John Paul II in 2015. This was no ordinary, one-day assignment. She was based for 15 days at a press center in the Pernik Hotel. During which time she had to intensively complete a series of journalistic projects.
She also acknowledges that, personally, there are two other assignments that were very difficult for her emotionally. One was the passage through Holguin of the Tribute Caravan to Fidel Castro in 2016. The other was the funeral rites for the 13 young combatants who died in the explosions in Melones in January 2025.
Yudit feels she has had the opportunity to get to know the people of Holguin, to know them intimately. So that “thanks to the radio station, I have been to almost every corner of Holguin province. Which has allowed me to tell the stories of so many humble people,” she affirms. Adding that this has made her a better person.
She remembers the great team of journalists at the station who, from the very beginning, became her teachers and mentors. Félix Hernández, Rigoberto González Limiñana, and Roberto Ortiz del Toro. And of course, Moraima López León, who opened the station’s doors to her.
Throughout these 18 years at CMKO, she has grown professionally. She currently holds a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and has directed news departments and programs at various times. She was also a delegate to the 11th Congress of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC). Last year, during Press Day, she received the Félix Elmuza Medal, the highest award given to its members by this organization. Of which she is a member of the provincial leadership in Holguin.
Yudit continues her journalism career with her measured speech and gentle tone. A backpack on, sneakers, and something always covering her head. Look for her at festivals, exhibitions, or simply interviewing the faces and voices of Holguin’s culture, always proud to be a radio broadcaster.
