Completion of Investment in BESS Battery Station in Holguin

Authorities from the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines inspected the completion of the investment in the Energy Storage Battery Station (BESS). Located in the Holguin municipality of Cueto, with a capacity of 50 megawatts (MW).

Participating in the tour were Joel Queipo Ruíz, First Secretary of the PCC Provincial Committee in Holguin, and Vicente de la O Levy, Minister of Energy and Mines. Along with other government and electricity sector officials in the province.

The project is part of the efforts to strengthen the energy infrastructure of this eastern region. Also to contribute to greater stability of the National Electric System (SEN) by storing and delivering energy during periods of high demand.

During the exchange, construction progress and remaining tasks for the commissioning of the facility. Considered strategic for the country’s energy development, were evaluated.

Furthermore the energy storage unit program in Cuba already has a BESS system operational in the municipality of Cotorro, Havana. Which provides 50 MW to regulate the grid and back up service during critical contingencies. Meanwhile, the Havana 220 kV system and the Bayamo system, in Granma province, are in an advanced stage of assembly. Together, they will add 200 MW of regulation capacity for the country.

Moreover these BESS systems allow the National Electric System (SEN) greater flexibility. Their speed of response to frequency changes, along with the ability to utilize renewable energy surpluses to cover peak nighttime demand. It reduces fossil fuel consumption and minimizes the impact of unexpected outages of large generating units. Thus improving the quality and stability of the electricity service.
