The Institutional Communications Department of the Cuban Telecommunications Company (Etecsa) issued a statement to the public. Regarding the false earthquake alert received by many users on their mobile phones on August 18th.

Information to the Public Regarding Seismic Alert Message:
On August 18th, in the afternoon, users in various parts of the country received earthquake alert messages on their mobile phones. In response, Civil Defense issued a statement clarifying that the alert was false.
An investigation was immediately launched to identify the source of the incident. Based on the final results, it was determined that the messages were sent due to a technical error by our specialists. Also who were conducting tests on the telecommunications network.
Following the incident, the corresponding analyses were carried out. Measures were taken with those responsible, and actions are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
We are aware of the concern and unease generated by this false earthquake alert, and we apologize to the public.
