Cuba won two gold medals, two bronze medals, and a fifth-place finish on Monday. Taking first place in the individual judo tournament at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026. Held at the Combat Sports Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
The Cuban men’s and women’s teams dominated the competition with six gold and four bronze medals. Followed by the host Dominican Republic (3-2-6) and Venezuela (2-1-7), nations that shared 11 of the 14 titles up for grabs.
On Monday, Andy Granda and Iván Felipe Silva (100 kg) were crowned champions. While Lianet Cardona (78 kg) and Dayanara Curbelo (+78 kg) took the bronze medals. Naysdel Cardoso (90 kg) finished fifth in the bronze medal match.
Granda and Silva reached the top of the podium with victories by Ippon and Wazari against José Nova of the Dominican Republic. And Francisco Balanta of Colombia, respectively.
Cardona and Curbelo defeated Zunilda Chávez of Venezuela and Izayana Morinco of Nicaragua, both by Ippon, for the bronze medal. Cardoso lost by Ippon to Jonhelius Patete of Venezuela, who earned the bronze.
In previous days, the Cubans won six medals, on Saturday (3-0-0) and Sunday (1-0-2).
Sunday’s medalists were Marlón Herrera, gold in the 73 kg category. Maylín del Toro (63 kg) and Anisleidys Ur López (70 kg), who both won bronze medals. On Saturday, Jonathan Charón (60 kg), Dali Senmanat (52 kg), and Orlando Polanco (66 kg) took home the gold.
Rubén Romero (81 kg) finished without a medal on Sunday, ending his participation in the repechage. On Saturday, Yainet Coronado (48 kg) and Lían Benavides (57 kg) finished fifth after losing their bronze medal matches.
Today’s schedule includes the mixed team tournament. With competition in the 57, 70, and +70 kg (women) and 73, 90, and +90 kg (men) categories. Cuba is also considered a favorite in this competition.
