The feature-length documentary “Lorca in Havana” is competing in this category at the 20th Gibara International Low-Budget Film Festival (FICGIBARA 2026). Which officially began this Tuesday and will run until July 18th.
“Lorca in Havana” captures moments from the Granada-born poet’s trip to Cuba. Leaving his mark through testimonies, reenactments of events, and the use of documentary, theatrical, and musical sources.
Directed by Spanish filmmakers José Antonio Torres and Antonio Manuel Rodríguez. The documentary arrives at FICGIBARA 2026 after an extensive run that included its participation in the past Havana Film Festival and other screenings.
The poet’s imprint, the significance of that journey for his work and life. As well as the legacy he left behind, are some of the themes reflected in the film.
In this sense, the directors employ resources ranging from the use of theater to narratives of historical events and his time in Cuba. Resulting in a piece that articulates its discourse through the integration of sources, research, and the creation of a symbolic universe around the journey and the author.
Those who attend its screening in Gibara will be able to appreciate the testimony of a visit that transcended the allure of the island’s light, poetry, and the metaphor of travel. Settling into an evocative territory where memory, the past, and history complement each other in a single work.
Reflecting on the poet’s life in the largest of the Antilles, the places he frequented in Havana, and his journey to Santiago de Cuba. Perfectly illustrated in his celebrated poem “Son de negros en Cuba (Iré a Santiago)”—expresses the author’s desire to take a piece of this island with him. From the perspective of someone who traveled its entirety.
In addition to “Lorca in Havana,” the documentary feature film competition includes works from various countries. With diverse themes and aesthetics, but which together form a broad and varied selection in terms of visual and narrative aspects.
The twentieth edition of FICGIBARA 2026 continues its program today, Wednesday. In the small white town that captivated Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás (1944-2008). During the filming of the Cuban film “Miel para Oshún.”
Solás wanted to provide the city with a multicultural space, which materialized in 2003 with the first edition of the Festival. A dream that has not only made it possible to screen films from different parts of the world. But also to meet filmmakers and artists.
