Cuba Takes Complaint Against US Energy Blockade in the UN

Cuba will denounce the energy blockade imposed by the United States before the UN General Assembly today. Amid a diplomatic offensive by Washington to prevent the international body from addressing the humanitarian consequences of the blockade.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez is leading the Cuban delegation at this urgent session. Where Havana will present a formal complaint against the aggressive actions of the United States. Including the energy blockade that has jeopardized essential services such as health, food, and transportation.

Ambassador Jorge Luis Pedroso confirmed that the complaint is framed within the gravity of a multidimensional aggression. That includes economic, political, and communications dimensions, and even the potential for military aggression.

The Cuban complaint comes in a context of intense diplomatic pressure from the United States to prevent the UN from discussing the effects of the blockade.

A State Department cable, signed by Secretary Marco Rubio and leaked to The Nation. It urges US ambassadors worldwide to “prevent the United Nations from addressing the effects of the aggressive economic policy on the Cuban people this Tuesday.”

The document, revealed by journalists Peter Kornbluh and Ken Klippenstein, seeks to silence the international debate on the embargo. Or, failing that, to blame the Cuban government for the country’s severe economic crisis, exacerbated in 2026 by the energy blockade that prevents fuel supplies.

“The cable confirms what Cuba has been denouncing: Washington not only maintains the embargo, the energy blockade, and financial sanctions. Also attempts to silence the international debate on their humanitarian consequences,” the authors argue in the article published by The Nation.

He also warned countries that have traditionally supported Cuba at the United Nations to be “extremely careful” in their interventions and avoid comments favorable to Havana. Under the express threat that such pronouncements could generate “friction” in bilateral relations with the United States.

In statements to the press, Ambassador Pedroso affirmed that the energy embargo imposed on Cuba. Along with other measures that intensify the blockade, constitutes “an act of genocide, collective punishment, and a massive, flagrant. And systematic violation of the human rights of the Cuban people.”

Moreover the diplomat emphasized that today’s debate in the General Assembly is distinguished by the urgency and gravity of the situation facing the island.

“This is not a hypothetical situation of aggression; it is not based on a simple risk assessment. It is an ongoing aggression, a multidimensional aggression: economic, political, and media-related. And it also contemplates the eventual military aggression,” he stressed.
