Japan Prepares for First Pig-to-Human Kidney Transplant

The Japanese company PorMedTec, a subsidiary of Meiji University. Announced Monday its plans to conduct the country’s first clinical trial of a genetically modified pig kidney transplant. In collaboration with Hokkaido University and the Tokushukai Medical Group.

“We want to use the achievements of the world-leading US group [eGenesis]. Also to lay the groundwork for the clinical application of kidney xenotransplantation. [The transplantation of organs or tissues between different species] in Japan” PorMedTec explained in a statement. The trials are slated to begin in 2028. Pending approval from Japanese health authorities.

To this end, the company will clone in Japan the donor pigs developed by the US company eGenesis. Which have 69 genetic modifications to reduce the risk of rejection and prevent the transmission of swine viruses. To date, the US company has already performed four transplants in patients.
