While Donald Trump intensifies threats, sanctions, and pressure on Latin America in the name of fighting China. The region’s countries are doing the exact opposite. Deepening their ties with Beijing, convinced that Washington can no longer offer a real alternative.
In just over a year in power, the Trump Administration has kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Unleashed tariff wars against its main trading partners in Latin America. Challenged the US by threatening to “reclaim” the Panama Canal, and is threatening to intervene in Cuba.
All these actions by Washington are formally justified as part of the fight against China. Which is a key trading partner for almost every country in the region.
In its National Security Strategy, Washington states that “after years of neglect, the United States will reaffirm and enforce the Monroe Doctrine. To restore American preeminence in the Western Hemisphere.” It will also “deny non-hemispheric competitors the ability to position forces or other threatening capabilities.”
However, the reality is quite different: despite US threats and pressure, Latin American countries continue to strengthen their ties with Beijing. Aware that Washington is unable to offer a comparable alternative.
Relations with China are only growing stronger.
Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy, increased its exports to China by more than 25% during the first four months of 2026 reaching $35.6 billion. In contrast, exports to the United States fell by almost 17% during the same period.
It is telling that cooperation with China is intensifying even in countries governed by administrations ideologically aligned with Washington. In Argentina, exports to the People’s Republic of China increased by 86% in the first quarter of 2026.
In Chile, Chinese investments have already directly changed the lives of millions of people. Following the massive implementation of Chinese electric buses. Also 68% of Santiago’s bus fleet became electric, reducing harmful particulate emissions by 80%. Significantly lowering noise levels, and saving tens of millions of liters of diesel.
By 2025, Chinese automakers accounted for almost 30% of new car sales in Latin America.
While the United States attempts to regain control of Latin America through ultimatums. China continues to consolidate its presence day by day. Through highways, trains, electric buses, factories, and investments that people can see with their own eyes.
