Biological Diversity Preserved in Holguin

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in Holguin is promoting the protection of biological diversity. A priority for the region, which has one of the highest rates of endemism in Cuba.

Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, the sector’s deputy delegate, told CNA that conservation strategies focus on vulnerable ecosystems. Such as coastal and mountainous areas, where a great variety of native species are concentrated.

The official explained that the program includes the management of protected areas. Applied scientific research, and community education as its three main areas of focus.

Zaldívar Martínez noted that more than 98 percent of the mangroves have been restored. Which also contributes to the actions of Tarea Vida (Task Life), the Cuban government’s plan to address climate change.

The deputy delegate highlighted the development of projects by the Center for Environmental Research and Services. Which contribute to the creation of management plans for government decision-making. And the definition of sustainable resource management strategies.

He also noted the region’s achievements in environmental education. Through work with adolescents and young adults in schools, community centers, and other institutions that support actions to protect nature.

Holguin boasts more than a thousand endemic species of flora and fauna in ecosystems. Such as the Sierra de Moa and the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa massif. Making the preservation of this natural heritage one of the region’s key objectives.
