Female athletes shine at the close of the Cuban Athletics Cup

The Cuban Athletics Cup concluded with several prominent female athletes. An event that has become an important step in the preparation for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.

On a day marked by strong winds during some events, the long jump and triple jump events stood out. Particularly due to the presence of world medalists Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea.

Although both specialize in the triple jump, Pérez chose to test herself only in the long jump. This time as a strategy to prepare for a more demanding international season in the coming weeks.

The two-time world indoor champion and current outdoor champion achieved a mark of 6.49 meters. Finishing second in an event led by 20-year-old Romaiby Quesada with 6.70 meters. Both jumps were achieved with a tailwind exceeding the permitted limit of 2.00 meters per second.

Dianelys Alacán completed the podium with a jump of 6.13 meters. Rounding out a trio of women who cleared six meters, according to Alfredo Sánchez’s statistical report.

As for Povea, who competed without any real competition in the triple jump. Her mark of 14.31 meters reflects her current form and met the expectations she had for the competition. She only attempted two jumps, recording 14.23 meters on the other.

Another woman who left the Pan American Stadium in Havana happy was Dianelis Delís after her 18.48-meter shot put. This is the second time this year she has surpassed 18 meters. The first was in March when she set a personal best of 18.64 meters.

The 2026 Cuba Athletics Cup will go down in history as the first event to feature the half-marathon race walk for both men and women. A discipline officially recognized by World Athletics last January.

Ronaldo Hernández, from Guantanamo, dominated the 21-kilometer race with a time of 1:35:02, setting a new national record.

Other results included Ronald Mencía’s victory with a jump of 77.07 meters. Jorge Hodelín’s 8.02 meters in the long jump, and Reynaldo Espinosa’s 200-meter time of 20.76 seconds and Yunisleidy García’s 23.59 seconds.

The competition, organized amidst the country’s challenges. It will serve as a follow-up to the planned events leading up to the regional competition this summer.

Also the international participation of most of the top athletes committed to the aforementioned event in Santo Domingo will soon be expanded. Last weekend, Roxana Gómez (400 meters) secured Cuba’s first podium finish at the Shanghai Diamond League. This Saturday, discus thrower Silinda Morales hopes to do the same in Xiamen.
